The Inconsequential Politician
Bangladesh, a small nation bordering on both India and Myanmar, forms a link between East and South East Asia, two regions dominated by two great civilizations, India and China. Bangladesh was once a part of the British Indian Empire which after Partition became the eastern province of Pakistan.

ÒThe Inconsequential PoliticianÓ begins with his birth in a rural part of what is now Bangladesh in the late 19th. Century. It covers the socio-political scenario from the time of his birth until his death in 1974. Set in a historic context, it traces the life of Ahmed Ali Mridha in the backdrop of the socio-politico events at a time when the country was struggling to break free from the shackles of political dominance by the British. This struggle is in part repeated when the people shake free from the dominance of West Pakistan. It describes in detail the War of Liberation in 1971 which culminated in the birth of the nation now known as Bangladesh.

At the time of his birth Mughal power had declined and British dominance was supreme. By then Bengal had become the gateway of European ascendancy in India. Trading had led to the usurpation of political power and the complete subjugation of Bengal to British political and cultural dominance. Thus this story that begins with the birth of this future politician in an out-of-the-way village of little importance to the British, or to anyone else culminates in his first flutter of political awareness and a desire to be free.

As such it was inevitable that Ahmed Ali Mridha when grown would join the fight for freedom. This story based on his life and times, throws Ahmed Ali Mridha into the spotlight. A member of the Legislative Assembly and a member of the National Assembly, Ahmed Ali Mridha played an important role in the economic life of Rajbari and in the transition to independence. Highly respected as a politician of worth he was one of the local breed known as a "social servants" who were so intent on the welfare of "their people" they neglected family responsibilities. Ahmed Ali Mridha was outstanding as a social servant. Honest and outspoken he always did his best for his people, but even he had to ultimately accept that despite all his efforts, he was in the end inconsequential.
