Origin of Inertia: Extended Mach's Principle and Cosmological Consequences
The primary theme of this monograph is a theory in which Newton's static gravitational interaction has been replaced by a new dynamic model. According to this theory the interactive gravitational force between two objects depends not only on the separation but also on the relative velocity and acceleration between the interacting bodies. In a sense it is an extension of Mach's Principle, and could be termed the Extended Mach's Principle. According to Mach's Principle a force acts on an accelerating object due to its interaction with the matter present in the rest of the universe. In the Extended Mach's Principle such an interactive force acts on a body due to its velocity (in the mean rest frame of the universe) also. This force has been termed the Cosmic Drag. The initial Chapters offer some general discussions and highlight certain interesting features of the fundamental problem of motion. It has been demonstrated that in a relational framework an absolute character can be assigned to displacement, and hence it is meaningful to talk about an absolute frame of reference in an infinite, non-evolving and quasistatic universe satisfying the Perfect Cosmological Principle. A brief account of the basic difficulties in the Newtonian formulation of mechanics is then presented, followed by a historical account of how the earlier researchers tried to resolve these issues through various suggestions for modifications in Newton's laws. The next chapter presents Sciama's attempt to quantify Mach's Principle and his model of acceleration dependent inertial induction. Next, this is extended to include a velocity-dependent inertial induction term. Though very small, the effect of the velocity dependent inertial induction term introduces some fundamental changes in the basic framework of mechanics, leading to a modified law of motion. The exact equivalence of gravitational and inertial masses emerges as a natural consequence of the dynamic gravitational interaction..

Mach's Principle and the Origin of Inertia
This volume consists of a selection of refereed invited lectures presented at the International Workshop on Mach’s Principle and the Origin of Inertia which was held at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India, as a part of the golden Jubilee celebrations of the Institute, from February 6 to 8, 2002. The Workshop was organized by the Centre for Theoretical Physics of the Institute with Prof. A.R. Roy as the Organising Secretary. It also includes a few contributions from experts who could not attend the Workshop. Inertia is one of the main physical properties of all bodies. Its origin poses problems of a fundamental nature. Ernst Mach proposed that the inertia of any body is caused by its interaction with the rest of the Universe. The idea reflects a deep connection between the cosmos at large and its individual constituent bodies, thereby implying a holistic conception of nature. On the whole, Ernst Mach had a seminal influence on the evolution of Physics in the 20th Century, and will influence the future development of Physics in the 21st Century. It is interesting that many of his ideas play a role (directly and indirectly) in opposite positions within contemporary physics. His epistemological viewpoint of positivism clearly influenced the basis of quantum mechanics. On the other hand his non-atomistic model of matter and the accompanying interpretation of inertial mass (the “Mach Principle”) influenced the holistic approach of the continuous field concept of the theory of general relativity, as a general theory of matter. The contributions to these proceedings demonstrate Mach’s influence on contemporary thinking. For we see here the views of an international group of scholars on the implications of Mach’s principle in physics and astrophysics. Physicists and laypersons alike, rejoice! The crumbling, 75-year-old flawed foundation of quantum-physics methodology is facing its imminent coup de grâce, to be replaced by a new, wholly-rational foundation Myhre's essay fires the first shot, which renders current physics textbooks instantly obsolete-Really! He begins with many insightful discoveries, the oldest, of which, dates from a half century ago, when he was a USAF pilot. It is about the great importance of inertia in our lives, of how it determines the size of our atoms and the rate of our aging, and of how Myhre eventually discovered that the number 137 is closely associated with inertia-he speculates that the magnitude of inertial force varies throughout the Universe and that it is 137 times greater in the vicinity of the Solar System than at a location in the Universe where it is at a minimum-pretty heady stuff-yet, his arguments, backed by mathematical equations, are quite convincing. Later, he made the all-important discovery of the quantum attributes of elementary particles, which, when used as units of measure, make the universal physical constants literally vanish from quantum-based equations. This simplification of a main aspect of quantum physics lead Myhre to discover other, heretofore, unknown aspects of our physical environment-for example: the simple, but elegant, linkage between electromagnetic and gravitational force; the realization of the beginning of a quantum-gravity model; the fine-structure constant's correct definition; the rôle of updated Planck values in determining the possible existence of an elementary particle of matter that is mediated by the graviton; new, more-rational equations about gravitational phenomena, using the quantum attributes of the hypothetical elementary particle of matter as units of measure; and many more. When Myhre retired, he decided to expose to the world the great truths about our quantum world that he has discovered over the decades. During that time, he kept most of his discoveries to himself because his family, friends, and associates, not being part of the physical community and, therefore, not in the know, would neither appreciate his discoveries nor recognize their importance. With the publication of this essay, Myhre hopes to prompt academic physicists to finalize the coup de grâce that he has begun by continuing to develop this more-coherent foundation for the methodology of quantum physics, which was impossible to achieve in the late 1920s because of the lack of sufficient knowledge at that time..

Gravitation and Inertia
