Spirits, Fairies, Leprechauns, and Goblins: An Encyclopedia
A fabulously entertaining work with over 100 delightful illustrations--Library Journal calls Spirits, Fairies, Leprechauns, and Goblins its "favorite work of 1996." In more than 2,000 alphabetically arranged entries, readers will meet angels, demons, elves, encantados, fairies, familiars, keremets, nats, nymphs, and many other strange beings from around the world. Carol Rose introduces the reader to the little--and not so little--folk, delightfully various and, at the same time, strikingly similar from country to country. Wherever humans have lived, the supernatural beings have dwelt alongside us. People serve to explain the unexplainable--the strange disappearance of a traveler in a dark wood, that odd thumping in the attic, the fresh cream turned sour overnight. Often they reveal the stoic humor with which human societies have faced their difficulties. But whatever their source, our guilts, fears, dreams, or imaginations, the spirits have fascinated and enchanted us through the millennia. Chosen by Library Journal as a Best Reference Source..

Periwinkle and the Cave of Courage (The Fairy Chronicles)
Mother Nature has asked that the magical creatures of the world take part in a challenge for her. The Cave of Courage, which supplies courage to all creatures the world over, is beginning to run dry and it needs to be replenished To do so, Mother Nature has asked that a team be put together of various magical creatures, led by the Fairies, to complete a set of tasks before nightfall.

Periwinkle, who has just been officially adopted by the Martinez family and who has just gotten back from a trip to see her great-grandfather in an Indian reservation in New Mexico is chosen to be the leader of the team. This time the team will have not only four fairies, Periwinkle, Spiderwort, Rosemary and Cinnabar, but will also have representatives from other magical creatures. Tom the Leprechaun will lend a hand, along with Annie the Troll, who is so forgetful it might be hard for her to do much good, Mr. Ambertoes, the wood gnome, and, most interestingly, a Dwarf who might just have to give up the greatest secret a dwarf has (his name) if the Cave is going to be restored.

It is the challenge of the century and usually would be no problem for Fairies, but this time they are going to have to not only trust each other but other creatures as well, something not everyone is good at..

The Chronicles of Faerie: The Hunter's Moon (Chronicles of Faerie)
An Irish Canadian author's lauded fairy fantasies are updated and introduced to U.S. fantasy readers for the first time in O.R. Melling's Chronicles of Faerie. The first volume, The Hunter's Moon, follows two cousins, Gwen and Findabhair, as they backpack around Ireland in search of the country's magical past. But the girls go too far when they dare to spend the night in a known fairy mound. Finn is stolen away by the dark king of Faerie to become his bride sacrifice to the Great Worm, or Hunter. It is up to timid Gwen to rescue her intrepid cousin, and she wonders if the task will be too much the first time she catches a glimpse of the Little People at play. "Gwen quaked inside. This wild abandon…was beyond anything she could imagine…Exquisite chaos." But with the help of a fairy doctress and her handsome grandson, Gwen assembles a rag tag team of heroes determined to bring Finn back -- even if it means the destruction of Faerie itself.

Melling's scholarship is evident. In fact, some readers may wonder why she just didn't write a nonfiction book about Ireland's rich folklore, as her characters often step clumsily out of the narrative to spout a factual, yet hyperbolic speech about a particular cave, lake or legendary creature. But while Melling's writing is less successful when her characters are on this side of the Veil, her descriptions of Fairie are sweeping and romantic. Fans of writers like Midori Snyder or Clare Dunkle are sure to enjoy them. (Ages 10-15) --Jennifer Hubert.

Summer With the Leprechauns: A True Story
While on retreat in Ireland, a corporate consultant, who also leads sacred site tours, met a Leprechaun with an urgent message for humanity: "Humans are harming our own environment and theirs." With charming style and humor, Ms. Helliwell recounts the instructions from the Leprechaun on how humans can interact with elemental beings to heal the Earth, as well as revealing the fascinating relationship she developed with this delightful fellow. At first you won't believe it ... then you will!

According to the Leprechaun, members of the elemental race are now seeking to link with and become co-creators with committed human beings who have (or wish to develop) both belief in the elemental kingdom and the reverent desire to assist nature in the healing of the earth. This book introduces humans to the means by which we can meet and work with elementals, individually, on an ongoing basis..
