A Companion to Linear B: Mycenaean Greek Texts and their World. Volume 1 (Bibliotheque des Cahiers de l'Institut de Linguistique de Louvain (BCILL)) (Bibliotheque ... de Linguistique de Louvain (BCILL))
Linear B is the earliest form of writing used for Greek; it is a syllabic script which belongs to the second half of the second millennium BC and precedes the earliest alphabetic texts by at least four hundred years. The tablets written in this script offer crucial information about the Mycenaean Greeks and their time. But who wrote these documents? How can we read them, understand them and interpret them? What do they teach us about the history, economy, religion, society, geography, technology, language, etc. of the Mycenaean period? The Companion aims at answering these and other questions in a series of chapters written by a team of internationally recognized specialists in the subject, who not only summarize the results of current research but also try to explain the problems which arise from the study of the texts and the methods which can be used to solve them. No Mycenologist can currently cover with authority the whole field and the Companion is aimed both at the beginner who needs an introduction to this area and to advanced scholars (archaeologists, historians, classicists) who require an up-to-date account which can serve as a standard reference tool and highlight the remaining problems..

Sorry, I Don't Speak French: Confronting the Canadian Crisis That Won't Go Away
As the threat of another Quebec referendum on independence looms, this book becomes important for every Canadianespecially as language remains both a barrier and a bridge in our divided country
Canada’s language policy is the only connection between two largely unilingual societies — English-speaking Canada and French-speaking Quebec. The country’s success in staying together depends on making it work.

How well is it working? Graham Fraser, an English-speaking Canadian who became bilingual, decided to take a clear-eyed look at the situation. The results are startling — a blend of good news and bad. The Official Languages Act was passed with the support of every party in the House way back in 1969 — yet Canada’s language policy is still a controversial, red-hot topic; jobs, ideals, and ultimately the country are at stake. And the myth that the whole thing was always a plot to get francophones top jobs continues to live.

Graham Fraser looks at the intentions, the hopes, the fears, the record, the myths, and the unexpected reality of a country that is still grappling with the language challenge that has shaped its history. He finds a paradox: after letting Quebec lawyers run the country for three decades, Canadians keep hoping the next generation will be bilingual — but forty years after learning that the country faced a language crisis, Canada’s universities still treat French as a foreign language. He describes the impact of language on politics and government (not to mention social life in Montreal and Ottawa) in a hard-hitting book that will be discussed everywhere, including the headlines in both languages..

Analyse linguistique de la langue franCaise
Analyse linguistique de la langue française provides a complete examination of the French language, in French, at a level appropriate for non-native speakers and non-linguists   It introduces readers to linguistic analysis, using modern French as its target of study, and covering the linguistic subfields of phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics.  It provides self-check questions and could easily be used for self-learning by an individual or by students in a classroom setting.

Analyse linguistique strives to present all concepts from the bottom up, assuming no prior knowledge of linguistics, and includes a glossary of terms to aid non-linguists.  It is these elements that distinguish it from other books in the field, which are often written for native speakers and are sometimes inaccessible to students of the language, or which assume a background in linguistics that not all readers have.  In addition, the book includes exercises placed strategically throughout each chapter, which allow the reader to verify his/her comprehension of each concept before moving on to the next topic.

Politeness in Language: Studies in Its History, Theory And Practice (Mouton Textbook)
The second edition of this collection of 13 original papers contains an updated introductory section detailing the significance that the original articles published in 1992 have for the further development of research into linguistic politeness into the 21st century. The original articles focus on the phenomenon of politeness in language. They present the most important problems in developing a theory of linguistic politeness, which must deal with the crucial differences between lay notions of politeness in different cultures and the term 'politeness' as a concept within a theory of linguistic politeness. The universal validity of the term itself is called into question, as are models such as those developed by Brown and Levinson, Lakoff, and Leech. New approaches are suggested. In addition to this theoretical discussion, an empirical section presents a number of case studies and research projects in linguistic politeness. These show what has been achieved within current models and what still remains to be done, in particular with reference to cross-cultural studies in politeness and differences between a Western and a non-Western approach to the subject. The publication of this second edition demonstrates that the significance of the collection is just as salient in the first decade of the new millennium as it was at the beginning of the 1990s..
