Sun Certified Enterprise Architecture for J2EE Technology Study Guide (Sun Microsystems Press)
This is the first authoritative, authorized study guide for Sun's challenging new Sun Certified Enterprise Architect for Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition Technology exams. Written by the exam's lead developer and assessor, it offers start-to-finish guidance and background for designing effective J2EE architectures -- and comprehensive preparation for all three exam elements you need to pass: Sun's multiple-choice exam, architecture/design project, and essay exam. Sun Microsystems Senior Java Architect Mark Cade begins with an overview of system architecture and its goals -- including structure, behavior, usage, functionality, performance, resilience, reuse, and comprehensibility. Cade shows how to document J2EE architectures through visual models and narratives -- creating System Requirements and System Architecture documents that act as blueprints for the entire development process. He introduces each of Sun's most powerful and useful J2EE architecture patterns; walks you through key security and internationalization issues, presents a full chapter on HTTP and other protocols for distributed systems development; and concludes with a start-to-finish case study. From legacy connectivity to messaging, firewall issues to servlets, the book covers every exam objective -- and every skill needed by J2EE enterprise architects..

Graphic Java 2, Volume 2, Swing (3rd Edition) (Sun Microsystems Press Java Series) (2 Book Set)
From Sun Microsystems Press and Prentice Hall comes the definitive guide to Swing: an exhaustive reference spanning more than 1600 pages. Clearly and concisely written and loaded with illustrative code examples, Graphic Java provides the most comprehensive Swing coverage available.

Part I (360 pages) discusses fundamental Swing concepts such as Swing component architecture, the JComponent class, borders, icons, actions, Swing and multithreading, Swing utilities, and pluggable look and feel.

Swing components are the focus throughout the rest of the book. In addition to code examples that illustrate component use, components are further explored with class diagrams, property and event tables, and a look at AWT compatibility. The final third of the book is devoted to Swing's most complex components: lists, combo boxes, tables, trees, and the text package..

Quality By Design: A Clinical Microsystems Approach
Quality by Design reflects the research and applied training conducted at Dartmouth Medical School under the leadership of Gene Nelson, Paul Batalden, and Marjorie Godfrey. The book includes the research results of high-performing clinical microsystems, illustrative case studies that highlight individual clinical programs, guiding principles that are easily applied, and tools, techniques, and methods that can be adapted by clinical practices and interdisciplinary clinical teams. The authors
  • describe how to develop microsystems that can attain peak performance through active engagement of interdisciplinary teams in learning and applying improvement science and measurement;
  • explore the essence of leadership for clinical Microsystems;
  • show what mid-level leaders can do to enable peak performance at the front lines of care;
  • outline the design and redesign of services and planning care to match patient needs with services offered;
  • examine the issue of safety;
  • describe the vital role of data in creating a rich and useful information environment;
  • provide a core curriculum that can build microsystems’ capability, provide excellent care, promote a positive work environment, and contribute to the larger organization.

Microsystem Design
The goal of this book is to bring together into one accessible text the fundamentals of the many disciplines needed by today's engineer working in the field of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS).
The subject matter is wide-ranging: microfabrication, mechanics, heat flow, electronics, noise, and dynamics of systems, with and without feedback. Because it is very difficult to enunciate principles of `good design' in the abstract, the book is organized around a set of Case Studies that are based on real products, or, where appropriately well-documented products could not be found, on thoroughly published prototype work.
The Case Studies were selected to sample a multidimensional space: different manufacturing and fabrication methods, different device applications, and different physical effects used for transduction. The Case Study subjects are: the design and packaging of a piezoresistive pressure sensor, a capacitively-sensed accelerometer, a quartz piezoelectrically-driven and sensed rate gyroscope, two electrostatically-actuated optical projection displays, two microsystems for the amplification of DNA, and a catalytic sensor for combustible gases.
This book is used for a graduate course in `Design and Fabrication of Microelectromechanical Devices (MEMS)' at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It is appropriate for textbook use by senior/graduate courses in MEMS, and will be a useful reference for the active MEMS professional.
Each chapter is supplemented with homework problems and suggested related reading. In addition, the book is supported by a web site that will include additional homework exercises, suggested design problems and related teaching materials, and software used in the textbook examples and homework problems..

Configuring and Tuning Databases on the Solaris Platform (Solaris Series)
Using this book, database professionals can dramatically improve the performance and cost-effectiveness of virtually any database application running on the SolarisA (R) platform. Solaris database optimization specialist Allan Packer presents start-to-finish guidance on optimizing all four leading Solaris databases: Oracle, DB2, Sybase, and Informix. Configuring and Tuning Databases on the Solaris Platform brings together best-practice guidelines for every aspect of database tuning on Sun servers. Drawing on years of expertise as a Sun consultant, Packer presents detailed recommendations for data layout, CPU and memory configuration, and system sizing. He introduces a systematic, drill-down monitoring approach designed to help database professionals identify and resolve system bottlenecks that inhibit database performance. Packer demystifies database tuning by providing a quick primer that explains database architecture, key database concepts, and how to use key subsystems such as query optimizers and buffer cache. He describes and critiques each leading database benchmark, offering guidance for using benchmarks -- and not misusing them..
