Valuing Ecosystem Services: The Case of Multi-Functional Wetlands
Ecosystem services can be broadly defined as the aspects of ecosystems that provide benefits to people. The aim of this book is to provide guidance on the valuation of ecosystem services, using the case of multi-functional wetlands to illustrate and make recommendations regarding the methods and techniques that can be applied to appraise management options. It provides a review of ecosystem service valuation rationale, including its importance from both a policy and project appraisal perspective, and a useful reference when considering policy and appraisal of ecosystem management options. It shows how legal obligations and other high-level management targets should be taken into account in valuation exercises, thus giving important policy context to the management options. The authors argue that it is not only ecosystems themselves that should be valued but also the goods and services provided, which affect human welfare. They build upon the idea of ecosystem services as the aspects of ecosystems consumed or utilized to produce human well-being, thus including ecosystem organization (structure), operation (process) and outflows. They set out what they call an Ecosystem Services Approach to the full appraisal of the role of ecosystem services in the economy and society. Although concentrating on wetlands, the approaches suggested provide an assessment framework, which can be applied, to other types of ecosystem assets..

Nanoscale Phenomena in Ferroelectric Thin Films (Multifunctional Thin Film Series)
Nanoscale Phenomena in Ferroelectric Thin Films presents the recent advances in the field of nanoscale science and engineering of ferroelectric thin films. It consists of two main parts: electrical characterization in nanoscale ferroelectric capacitor, and nano domain manipulation and visualization in ferroelectric materials. Well-known leading experts both in relevant academia and industry over the world (U.S., Japan, Germany, Switzerland, Korea) were invited to contribute to each chapter. The objectives of the book are to provide the reader with the information needed to 1.) build, see and manipulate domain structures; 2.) understand the unexplained macroscopic phenomena; and 3.) create ferroelectric thin film that shows novel and significantly improved physical, chemical properties and phenomena due to their nanoscale size. This forms the basis on which the existing technology can further improve its performance and/or a new and radical technology can evolve. Nanoscale ferroelectric materials, regardless of their dimensions (film, wire, island), are receiving great interests from academia and industry due to their various potential applications such as memory and storage devices (Ferroelectric Random Access Memory (FRAM), Probe-based Data Storage (PDS) System, etc), sensors (gas sensor, infrared detector, etc), and actuators (micro-mirrors, ultrasonic devices, etc). This book provides the compass to navigate the unknown sea of information related to the nanoscale phenomena occurring in ferroelectric thin films. The intended audience includes professional researchers and engineers in physics, electronics, chemistry, and materials science who are interested either in nanotechnology or ferroelectrics..

Multifunctional Land Use: Meeting Future Demands for Landscape Goods and Services

Global change, land use policies and EU enlargement affect the driving forces for landscape functioning, land use management and rural development New demands on landscapes and natural resources call for multifunctional approaches to land development. Tools are required to (i) identify the effects of land management on landscape sustainability and (ii) support the decision-making process on the multipurpose utilisation of landscape resources.

Scientists from across Europe installed the Landscape Tomorrow network to be prepared for new challenges of research on sustainable land development in a European perspective. In this publication they (i) analyse general principles of land use multifunctionality, (ii) highlight the specific requirements and approaches of implementing multifunctional land use from different disciplinary viewpoints, (iii) report on success stories of multifunctional land use from different geographic and political settings, and (iv) discuss modelling and monitoring approaches to scientifically assess the impact of mutlifunctional land use implementation. The book contributes to the scientific basis for future land development strategies and helps supporting land use decision making on the political, planning and management level.

Multifunctional Pharmaceutical Nanocarriers (Fundamental Biomedical Technologies) (Fundamental Biomedical Technologies)

Various pharmaceutical nanocarriers, such as nanospheres, nanocapsules, liposomes, micelles, cell ghosts, lipoproteins and some others are widely used for experimental (and already clinical) delivery of therapeutic and diagnostic agents. The use of nanoparticulate pharmaceutical carriers to enhance the in vivo efficiency of many drugs well established itself over the past decade both in pharmaceutical research and clinical setting. Looking into the future of the field of drug delivery, we have to think about the development of the next generation of pharmaceutical nanocarriers combining the whole variety of properties and allowing for the simultaneous performance of multiple functions. Surface modification of pharmaceutical carriers is often used to control their properties in a desirable fashion and make them to simultaneously perform several different functions. This book is all about these futuristic multifunctional medicines.

Multifunctional Pharmaceutical Nanocarriers intends to bring together the experts in the field of multifunctional nanopharmaceuticals to provide the reader with the cutting edge information, a critical overview of the field, and analysis of the current and future tendencies and developments to aid in the rapid developments in the field.
