Introduction from the Author

Introduction from the Author

Ever since ground was broken in the fall of 1817, the University of Virginia has remained tied to its roots, its history, and to founding father Thomas Jefferson s ideals. Jefferson once wrote: knowledge is power, knowledge is safety, knowledge is happiness. Certainly these words of insight have been instilled into every soft red brick, every arch, and every student s mind at the University. The staff and students of UVA genuinely believe in Jefferson s principles and in the importance of intellect, but even more than that, Virginia students value one another s beliefs and cherish the ability to just relax, breathe, and take in all there is out there.

Coming into UVA, I must admit I was less than excited. I knew it was a great school academically, and I remember hearing the phrase the Harvard of the South multiple times from my father - who was also quick to point out how great a deal its in-state tuition was (and it really is). But there were things that scared me about the school: the notorious Greek life that seemed to infest the social scene, the enormous size of the student body, and the fact that my social security number was all that distinguished me from other students at summer orientation.

But not a month after graduation, I find that the longer I stay, the harder it is for me to leave. Charlottesville and UVA have their hooks in me. As I walk around Grounds and watch as the summer session students race to their classes, I wonder if they have had a chance to lie under the trees on the Lawn and look up towards the Rotunda; I wonder if they have had the chance to realize what a beautiful, inspiring place this is.

I wish you the best of luck in your college search, wherever you end up. I hope this book brings greater insight into the real experience at the University of Virginia, and, if you happen to someday find yourself walking around Jefferson s Grounds, I wish you some of the same affection and love that I have gradually gained for this place.

Duquesne University - College Prowler Guide (Off the Record)
Introduction from the Author

Choosing a place of residence and learning for the next four years of your life can truly be an exciting, if not occasionally unnerving, task. Many factors came together to influence me into choosing Duquesne University. At the time, the location, facilities, and available areas of study proved Duquesne a good home for four (or more) years.

What first strikes visitors to Duquesne is the overall beauty of the campus. Although PittsburghÂ’s skyline is visible anywhere on University grounds, one would never think Duquesne could lie in such an urban setting. It seems a world all its own. However, a studentÂ’s entire university experience will weigh upon much more than just the campusÂ’s appearance.

Although I have come to appreciate the quality of the education I receive at Duquesne, I think I would have liked to learn more about it before I made my final decision. It is often helpful to read independent opinions of the services, facilities, and education provided by a college or university. Turning back the clock, a College Prowler guide to Duquesne would have been a godsend in my search for the perfect school.

Am I confident I made a correct choice in selecting Duquesne? Yes. Do I think that Duquesne offers a fantastic university atmosphere? Most definitely. Do I believe that Duquesne has much to improve upon? Of course. During my search for an institute of higher learning, I was not aware of many of DuquesneÂ’s and the other prospective schoolsÂ’ faults. This guide should help shed some light on the negative aspects of this university as well as the positives.

So, let us begin. As you read this guidebook, keep this question in mind: do you want to spend the next four years of your life—along with thousands of dollars—at Duquesne? Hopefully, this guide will present you with an unbiased look at everything this university and the city of Pittsburgh has to offer. If, after reading it, you decide Duquesne sounds like a place you want to be, come visit, and put your knowledge of the campus and city to use. If you discover through this guide that Duquesne simply does not have what you are looking for, I am sure an acceptable college or university will cross your path.

Assault on the Senses is a dark comedy about Kalvin Gray, a college student drowning in a mix of late-night drinking binges and his own self-loathing Shattered by the insecurities caused by his most recent break-up and a lack of direction, Kalvin eccentrically stumbles through life one beer at a time. Things take a turn for the worst when he finds a "wanted" poster warning students of an attempted rapist, featuring a police sketch that appears to be him.
Knowing he didn't commit the crime and fearing this will ruin his reputation and any chance of ever having sex again, Kalvin eagerly tries to find a solution to this case of mistaken identity. However, it's not until Katie, the seductive editor of the school newspaper, comes along that Kalvin is better able to search for the truth--while taking an interest in her at the same time. What Kalvin doesn't realize is that looking for the truth will lead him to a secret that could ruin more than just his sex life...that is, if he can stay sober long enough to find the truth..
