This Light in Oneself
Krishnamurti ranks up there with Kahlil Gibran in what you might call common sense mysticism Repudiating his upbringing as a Theosophist World Leader, Krishnamurti pushed a sort of religious self-reliance, as evidenced in the title of this collection of essays, This Light in Oneself. Meditation for Krishnamurti has nothing to do with gurus, postures, or concentration exercises, nor is its purpose "to sleep longer, do your job better, or to get more money." What it is can be a bit slippery, though. As Krishnamurti states it, meditation is a psychological state--a kind of choiceless awareness, "a state in which the 'me' is totally absent." His argument comes out gradually in this series of essays that are here published for the first time. But since each essay was originally a self-enclosed lecture on meditation, there is much overlap of material. So the reader must approach the book like a spaceship that circles planets and moons in order to be slingshot to further reaches. Path: unknown. Final destination: enlightenment. --Brian Bruya.

Ruling Oneself Out: A Theory of Collective Abdications (Politics, History, and Culture)
What induces groups to commit political suicide? This book explores the decisions to surrender power and to legitimate this surrender: collective abdications. Commonsensical explanations impute such actions to coercive pressures, actors' miscalculations, or their contamination by ideologies at odds with group interests. Ivan Ermakoff argues that these explanations are either incomplete or misleading. Focusing on two paradigmatic cases of voluntary and unconditional surrender of power--the passing of an enabling bill granting Hitler the right to amend the Weimar constitution without parliamentary supervision (March 1933), and the transfer of full executive, legislative, and constitutional powers to Marshal Pétain (Vichy, France, July 1940)--Ruling Oneself Out recasts abdication as the outcome of a process of collective alignment.

Ermakoff distinguishes several mechanisms of alignment in troubled and uncertain times and assesses their significance through a fine-grained examination of actors' beliefs, shifts in perceptions, and subjective states. To this end, he draws on the analytical and methodological resources of perspectives that usually stand apart: primary historical research, formal decision theory, the phenomenology of group processes, quantitative analyses, and the hermeneutics of testimonies. "Work on Oneself": Wittgenstein's Philosophical Psychology (Institute for the Psychological Sciences Monograph)

Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889-1951) was by any reckoning one of the major modern philosophers. Raised as a Catholic in late-nineteenth-century Vienna, he later gave up practicing his religion; yet, as journal notes and many anecdotes attest, he remained deeply if ambivalently interested in religion throughout his life. Students of the philosophy of religion are familiar with his lectures on religious belief. For the rest, however, in the vast collection of commentary and criticism that has accumulated over the years, little attention has been paid to his religious interests.

In consideration of how far Wittgenstein's Catholic background may have influenced his philosophical reflections on the soul, preeminent author Fergus Kerr explores aspects of Wittgenstein's personal and professional life.

Beginning with a largely biographical study of Wittgenstein, Kerr argues that Wittgenstein's philosophy was partly prompted by his strong reaction against what he regarded as an excessively rationalistic type of Catholic apologetics that he was taught in his early school years. His serious interest as a student at Cambridge in experimental psychology and in the works of Freud is documented.

In the second half of the book, Kerr expounds Wittgenstein's famous "Private Language Argument"--his mockery of the idea that one could have thoughts that are in principle incommunicable. He then discusses three philosophers, John Wisdom, Stanley Cavell, and Richard Eldridge, who have developed Wittgenstein's ideas on self-understanding in ways that should interest students with a desire to rethink psychology in the context of an integrally humanist anthropology of the human person.
