The Brutal Seas: Organised Crime at Work
Even as you read this book, mariners somewhere are being attacked by armed pirates, their faces masked and the weapons deadly. Organized crime has taken over where Blackbeard left off. Piracy today is just as brutal, perhaps even more so. Crew-members may be murdered, tortured, seized as hostages or simply dumped overboard to sink or swim. To the big-time gangsters behind much of the crime, life is cheap and must not stand in the way of profit. Attacking and stealing tankers or other cargo is a multi-billion industry. International law enforcement has yet to show sufficient concerted will to beat organised crime at sea, though it is awakening from its years of slumber. Additionally since 9-11, a new and fearful maritime threat has emerged- international terrorism. Experts agree that civilised nations, American ports and cities far from the sea, are vulnerable to a variety of terrifying risks from use of the sea and ships. The book looks at the dangers and what is being done to defeat the terrorists. The Brutal Seas brings to real life all the terror of an attack by pirates armed with rocket-launchers and automatic machine-guns. It tells of disappearing phantom ships and of a cigarette fraud run by a fraudster from New Jersey. As it enters the mysterious world of the Triads, some of the most bloody, cunning and lucrative attacks, frauds and schemes of the past twenty years are brought to the page in an exciting and refreshing way. Written with an unprecedented degree of co-operation from the ICC International Maritime Bureau, a non-Government agency dedicated to tackling the problems, it is no surprize that The Brutal Seas has been called the benchmark on crime at sea by the Bureau's founder Eric Ellen..

The Economics of Organised Crime
This book uses economic theory to analyze the different aspects of organized crime. The theory of rent-seeking is adopted to help understand the origin of criminal organizations, while modern industrial organization theory is used to explain the design of internal rules. The market behavior of organized crime is analyzed, the "crime and economics" approach being applied to the analysis of corruption that occurs when the organized crime sector and the government collude to exploit their monopoly on rule-making. Each chapter outlines the normative results of the analysis in order to design more sophisticated deterrence policies..

Armed Actors: Organised Violence and State Failure in Latin America
This volume explores recent evidence of how partial state failure in Latin America interacts with new forms of organized violence, undermining the democratic consolidations of the past two decades. This "new violence" stems from a variety of social actors: drug mafias, peasant militias and urban gangs, the so-called actores armadas, and include state-related actors like the police, military intelligence agencies and paramilitary forces. The results include both "governance voids"--domains where the legitimate state is effectively absent--and the erosion of the capacity and willingness of state officials to abide by the rule of law themselves. These tendencies, in turn, threaten the possibility of a re-installation of authoritarian regimes under the control of political armies or, at the very least, the spread of state violence in one form or another. This book sees links between this collapse of governance and the weakening of state structures undertaken in the name of neoliberal economic reforms.

War and Genocide: Organised Killing in Modern Society
This comprehensive introduction to the study of war and genocide presents a disturbing case that the potential for slaughter is deeply rooted in the political, economic, social and ideological relations of the modern world.

Most accounts of war and genocide treat them as separate phenomena. This book thoroughly examines the links between these two most inhuman of human activities. It shows that the generally legitimate business of war and the monstrous crime of genocide are closely related. This is not just because genocide usually occurs in the midst of war, but because genocide is a form of war directed against civilian populations. The book shows how fine the line has been, in modern history, between 'degenerate war' involving the mass destruction of civilian populations, and 'genocide', the deliberate destruction of civilian groups as such.

Written by one of the foremost sociological writers on war, War and Genocide has four main features:

? an original argument about the meaning and causes of mass killing in the modern world;

? a guide to the main intellectual resources - military, political and social theories - necessary to understand war and genocide;

? summaries of the main historical episodes of slaughter, from the trenches of the First World War to the Nazi Holocaust and the killing fields of Cambodia, Bosnia and Rwanda;

? practical guides to further reading, courses and websites.

This book examines war and genocide together with their opposites, peace and justice. It looks at them from the standpoint of victims as well as perpetrators. It is an important book for anyone wanting to understand - and overcome - the continuing salience of destructive forces in modern society..

Heart of the Old Country

South Brooklyn Not the Brooklyn of Spike Lee or Matty Rich, but a counterpoint: those left behind in the white flight. Mike is 19 and at loose ends: driving for Big Lou's Car Service and trying to decide if he should stay in college or drift into the omnipresent arena of local organized crime. Mike's life is changed forever as he's forced to confront the grim realities of wiseguy justice and his own culpability in its execution. Echoing such urban low-life classics as Price's The Wanderers and Selby's Last Exit, this novel offers an honest, unromantic look at Brooklyn's underclass.

Tim McLoughlin was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, where he still resides. He is employed in the King's County Supreme Court.

Critical praise for Heart of the Old Country:

"Set in the depths of working-class Brooklyn, this zippy first novel reads like an inspired cross between Richard Price's Bloodbrothers and Ross Macdonald's The Chill-part coming-of-age story, part thriller. Streetwise 19-year-old protagonist Mike spends his days driving for a car service and his nights attending college part-time. While trying to figure out which endeavor is more futile, he winds up on the periphery of a murder that will forever alter his destiny. Add to the mix Mike's marriage-minded neighborhood girlfriend, his borderline-wiseguy bookie dad, and a sexy and sophisticated coed temptress, and you've got all the ingredients for what may be a whole new genre: Call it mook noir. A-"-Tom Sinclair, Entertainment Weekly

"Tim McLoughlin writes about South Brooklyn with a fidelity to people and place reminiscent of James T. Farrell's Studs Lonigan and George Orwell's Down and Out in Paris and London. Among the achievements of his swiftly paced narrative is a cast of authentic and frequently complex characters whose voices reflect dreams and love as well as desperation to survive. No voice in this symphony of a novel is more impressive than that of Mr. McLoughlin, a young writer with a rare gift for realism and empathy."-Sidney Offit, author of Memoir of the Bookie's Son.

Gangs of Britain: The Gripping True Stories of the Faces Who Run Britain's Organised Crime

Today's gangsters are a far cry from their earlier counterparts. The godfathers of old were seen by many as a stabilizing influence; their power inspired respect and they kept the underworld in check. Gangs of the 21st century have spread their brutality far and wide. The old crimes of prostitution and extortion are being dropped in favor of multi-million dollar drug deals, bringing gangsters more money and power than ever before. It is a cut-throat industry that is conducted in the shadows and driven solely by profit. Acclaimed true crime author Wensley Clarkson has met many of Britain's richest and most powerful gangs. In this fascinating and gripping account, he provides an extraordinary insight into the dark and glamorous underworld of British organized crime. His investigation leads to the shocking conclusion that crime is perhaps the third largest industry in the UK.

Terrorism, Organised Crime and Corruption: Networks and Linkages
Leslie Holmes and a team of specialists from three continents analyse terrorism, organised crime and corruption both individually and in terms of the connections between them in this book. It is argued that if we are better to understand these three phenomena, their links not only to each other but also to corporate crime need to be analysed. There has been a marked growth in the awareness of corruption, organised crime and terrorism in recent years, especially since the end of the Cold War. Yet the linkages and resonances between these three forms of anti-social and anti-state behaviour are still not sufficiently recognised. Leslie Holmes and his fellow contributors analyse all three phenomena in concert to explain why it has taken so long for states, international organisations and the public to begin to appreciate the interplay between them. It is demonstrated that, while the recent growing awareness of connections between these three types of crime is welcome, there is also a fourth player that must sometimes be considered; transnational corporations. Although the book focuses mainly on Europe, Australia and the US, much of the analysis and theorising has global relevance. This timely book will appeal to advanced undergraduates and postgraduates in political science, international relations, international political economy, security studies and criminology..

Transnational Organised Crime
The perceived threat of 'transnational organised crime' to Western societies has been of huge interest to politicians, policy-makers and social scientists over the last decade. This book considers the origins of this crime, how it has been defined and measured, and the appropriateness of governments' policy responses. The contributors argue that while serious harm is often caused by transnational criminal activity - for example, trafficking in human beings - the construction of that criminal activity as an external threat obscures the origins of these crimes in the markets for illicit goods and services within the 'threatened' societies. As such, the authors question the extent to which global crime can be controlled through law enforcement initiatives and alternative policy initiatives are considered. The authors also question whether transnational organised crime will retain its place on the policy agendas of the United Nations and European Union in the wake of the 'war on terror'..
