Ocean Waves and Oscillating Systems: Linear Interactions Including Wave-Energy Extraction
This volume examines the interaction between ocean waves and oscillating systems. With a focus on linear analysis of low-amplitude waves, the text is designed to convey a thorough understanding of wave interactions. Topics include the background mathematics of oscillations, gravity waves on water, the dynamics of wave-body interactions, and the absorption of wave energy by oscillating bodies. While the focus is on linear theory, the practical application of energy storage and transport is interwoven throughout. Each chapter ends with problems. A solutions manual is available for instructors..

Oscillating Patterns in Image Processing and Nonlinear Evolution
Image compression, the Navier-Stokes equations, and detection of gravitational waves are three seemingly unrelated scientific problems that, remarkably, can be studied from one perspective The notion that unifies the three problems is that of "oscillating patterns", which are present in many natural images, help to explain nonlinear equations, and are pivotal in studying chirps and frequency-modulated signals. The first chapter of this book considers image processing, more precisely algorithms of image compression and denoising. This research is motivated in particular by the new standard for compression of still images known as JPEG-2000. The second chapter has new results on the Navier-Stokes and other nonlinear evolution equations. Frequency-modulated signals and their use in the detection of gravitational waves are covered in the final chapter. In the book, the author describes both what the oscillating patterns are and the mathematics necessary for their analysis. It turns out that this mathematics involves new properties of various Besov-type function spaces and leads to many deep results, including new generalizations of famous Gagliardo-Nirenberg and Poincaré inequalities. This book is based on the "Dean Jacqueline B. Lewis Memorial Lectures" given by the author at Rutgers University. It can be used either as a textbook in studying applications of wavelets to image processing or as a supplementary resource for studying nonlinear evolution equations or frequency-modulated signals. Most of the material in the book did not appear previously in monograph literature..

Frequency Measurement and Control: Advanced Techniques and Future Trends (Topics in Applied Physics)
Optical frequency measurement is an extremely challenging field of experimental physics which is presently undergoing a renaissance driven by the needs of modern high density optical communication systems as well as by requirements of high-resolution laser spectroscopy. This text is the first to discuss the development of traditional and second generation frequency chains together with their enabling technology. Reviews written by some of the most experienced researchers in their respective fields address the technology of frequency metrology such as: low noise microwave oscillators and microwave frequency standards, low noise and high stability optical frequency sources, optical frequency standards, traditional and second-generation optical frequency measurement and synthesis techniques as well as optical frequency comb generators. It should prove useful to researchers just entering the field of frequency metrology or equally well to the experienced practitioner..

Oscillations, Waves, and Chaos in Chemical Kinetics (Oxford Chemistry Primers)
The phenomena of oscillations, travelling waves, and chaos in reacting chemical systems began as curiosities but now support an active, international research field. This book shows how these "exotic" patterns arise from the underlying chemical mechanisms. The origin of "chemical feedback" is revealed using three example reactions: the isolate-reductant (Landolt) reaction, the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction, and the combustion of hydrogen. Thermal feedback is also discussed. These mechanisms lead to clock reactions and travelling reaction fronts, thermal runaway, and flames; to oscillations and excitability; to target patterns, spiral and scroll waves; to bistability, ignition, extinction, and hysteresis; and to complex oscillations and chaos in flow reactors. These phenomena are related to important processes in biology, including the development of cardiac arrhythmias, nerve signal transmission, and animal coat patterning..
