Lord, Have Mercy: The Healing Power of Confession
An illuminating, reassuring explanation of the Catholic Church’s teachings on confession and forgiveness by the bestselling author of The Lamb’s Supper and Hail, Holy Queen.
Jesus told his first clergy, “If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” In Lord, Have Mercy, Scott Hahn explores the sacrament of reconciliation and shows why it is the key to spiritual growth, particularly in these times of intense anxiety and uncertainty. Drawing on the history of ancient Israel, the Gospels, the writings of the early Church, and the lives of the saints, Hahn reveals the living, scriptural heart of the Church’s teachings on penance, forgiveness, and reconciliation. It is a story that begins with the sin of Adam and Eve, continues in the biographies of Moses, King David, and the Apostle Peter, and reverberates in the lives of believers today. Hahn presents the Catholic and biblical perspective on sin and mercy, elucidating in clear, easily understood language the true import of Jesus’ simple, yet profound promise–“I am the door; if anyone enters by Me, he will be saved (John 10:9). Like Hahn’s earlier books, Lord, Have Mercy offers thoughtful, authoritative insights into controversial issues and disputed doctrines in a manner that will enlighten lay readers yet is thorough enough for scholars to appreciate. More than just a Bible study, it is a guide for the perplexed, providing practical advice and inspiration that will help readers come to a deeper knowledge of themselves and of Jesus through the sacrament of penance..

My God Box: Parable of the Incorrigible Child
My God Box is Margarets memoir about her abusive childhood. She lived in a receiving home for battered children called Juvenile Hall, a carousel of foster care families, a mental health facility and on the streets of California-- all before the Holy Ghost impregnated her heart with a love of God, planting in her mind an iron clad faith in the Divine Creator. Labeled an incorrigible child, Margaret was pulled from school and her friends, and banished from the family home. But God had other plans for her. Miserable, with no one to turn to, Margaret says, I received a special gift the Holy Ghost enlightened me to the love and goodness of the Lord. It was empowering. It was a life altering event but more importantly I received a calling to help others. This book is for anyone suffering from a past trauma who wants to learn how to move on with their life. My God Box is the revelation of how Margaret shattered the victim mind-set; a self-defamatory attitude that actually made her more of a victim than the devastating circumstances of her life. With the help of God, she affirms, I was able to interrupt the harmful sequence of negativity and concentrate on utilizing my faith to rid me of the fears and insecurities that locked me in an impasse. My God Box is about the power of faith in God. It s about opening your mind and heart to the message of God. It s about awareness of the evils that surround us, and about having the courage to right the wrongs that bring pain and misery to other children..

Do Penance or Perish: Magdalen Asylums in Ireland
Frances Finnegan traces the development of Ireland's Magdalen Asylums--homes that were founded in the mid-nineteenth century for the detention of prostitutes undergoing reform. The inmates of these asylums were discouraged-and many forcibly prevented-from leaving and sometimes were detained for life. Put to work without pay in adjoining laundries, these women were subject to penance, harsh discipline, enforced silence, and prayer. Their hair was cropped, and they were made to wear drab and shapeless clothing. Forbidden to mention their past lives, their children taken away, the inmates themselves were referred to as children and forced to address the nuns as "Mother." As the numbers of prostitutes began to dwindle, the church looked elsewhere for this free labor, targeting other "fallen" women such as unwed mothers and wayward or abused girls. Some were incarcerated simply for being "too beautiful," and therefore in danger of sin. Others were mentally retarded. Most of them were brought to the asylums by their families or priests. Unbelievably, the last of these asylums was closed only in 1996. Drawing on previously unpublished material, Finnegan presents case histories of individual women and their experiences in Magdalen homes, which claimed some 30,000 women in all. She looks at the social consequences of such a system, and ponders how it was able to survive into the late twentieth century, right through the feminist campaign for women's rights. Do Penance or Perish is the first study of this shameful episode in Irish history..
