The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio: How My Mother Raised 10 Kids on 25 Words or Less
The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio introduces Evelyn Ryan, an enterprising woman who kept poverty at bay with wit, poetry, and perfect prose during the "contest era" of the 1950s and 1960s. Standing up to the church, her alcoholic husband, and antiquated ideas about women, Evelyn turned every financial challenge into an opportunity for innovation, all the while raising her six sons and four daughters with the belief that miracles are an everyday occurrence. The inspiration for a major motion picture, Evelyn Ryan's story is told by her daughter Terry with an infectious joy that shows how a winning spirit and sense of humor can triumph over adversity every time..

Posters of the Canadian Pacific
Three hundred vintage advertising and promotional posters. During the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century, the Canadian Pacific Railway Company (CPR) was widely hailed as "The World's Greatest Travel System." The Canadian Pacific transcontinental railroad spanned North America from the Atlantic to Pacific oceans. The company also operated luxury hotels and resorts, passenger ocean liners, cargo ships, and an airline. To promote the company and Canada to the world, Canadian Pacific produced more than 2,500 stunning lithographic and silkscreen posters -- 1,000 of which were created in its own graphic studio. Posters of the Canadian Pacific is a treasury of three hundred of the finest posters published by the company. They were displayed in Canadian Pacific offices and independent travel agencies worldwide from the 1880s until the 1970s. These posters enticed millions to visit and even settle in Canada. The posters span the years 1883-1973 with special focus on the Art Deco style posters of the 1920s and '30s. They focus on travel and leisure -- activities on ski slopes, golf courses, beaches, and luxury resorts. Other posters feature Canadian Pacific ocean liners in exotic locations around the globe such as the West Indies, Rio, Hawaii and the Orient. Posters of the Canadian Pacific will appeal to a wide audience including art lovers, history buffs and railroad enthusiasts. (20041203).

Marketing in the In-Between: A Post-Modern Turn on Madison Avenue
Marketing in the early 21st century is dominated by two approaches, neither of which is visible to the naked eye: the use of data to define and shape human affairs into machine-readable form and the effort to create and sustain ongoing two-way relationships with customers. The former is one way human life is being subjugated to the regime of the machine; the latter is one way the individual may one day emerge from within the datascape. A post-modern perspective is used to reveal both the 'kaleidoroscope' of data and the 'raw immaterials' of relationships in two companion essays..

8W8 - Global Space Tribes: a post-modern journey through globalization in the internet age powered by the world modeling engine 8W8
8W8 - Global Space Tribes is a new way to see the world. It is written for everyone who uses the Internet, travels and is interested in any aspect of the world in the 21st century The Golden Sky is a community comprised of 15 charismatic Internet activists from the worlds of business, finance, media, government, bio sciences, medicine, social and religious activists and environmentalists. They came together to meet on Hawaii in the fantastically beautiful mountain home, EA-RA, of the Chinese Internet billionaire, Winston Chee. There they develop a new world modeling engine, ultimately named, 8W8, which would find the invisible digital elements, i.e. the online population and digital activities, and render them visible to the world stake holding factors they define. Global Space Tribes are the Internet users The Golden Sky is able to identify with 8W8. They exist out of elements that come together in streams and interconnect with other streams around the world and can be visualized and volumized from the cockpit of the 8W8 world modeling engine, which The Golden Skyers dubbed the 8W8 Helicopter for the purpose of entering virtual rides. The pilot of the 8W8 Helicopter, albeit, an Internet user, a marketer, a traveler or political candidate or simply "You" of any background, could virtually ride over the flattened but fragmented world identifying subjectively or objectively new virtual structures, tracking the flow and concentrations of criteria such as: the presence or lack of wealth, trade, interconnectivity, beliefs, environmental conditions, peace record, happiness, and any other factors that are normally invisible for the naked eye. When BridgeMan, Winston's business partner from San Francisco, comes to EA-RA and learns about 8W8, he saw an immediate benefit for himself and the world in general. He extolled the concept as a way of making the invisibilities of the 21st century visible and of improving the state of the world....

Selling Themselves: The Emergence of Canadian Advertising
From its origins in the Victorian era as a marginal and somewhat shady enterprise, the advertising trade in Canada changed radically after the turn of the century - rising quickly to a position of influence and respectability. In this book, Russell Johnston tells the story of the people who made it so. Johnston's setting is the dynamic intersection of business and culture during the early decades of the twentieth century. During this period, he argues, magazines and newspapers grew increasingly dependent on sales of advertising space, and this precipitated a widespread restructuring of the publishing industry. Ultimately, this affected the range and content of Canadian periodicals, setting the parameters for a newly invigorated, though still fragile, Canadian magazine industry. Johnston charts this process by exploring the lives, goals and ideas of a new breed of solicitor, the ad agent, and shows how agencies began to draw on the disciplines of psychology and economics to promote their products, thus initiating the modern market research industry. The only thorough analysis of the forces shaping advertising in Canada prior to 1930, this study documents the emergence in Canada of a key component of the modern culture of consumption..
