The Social Theory of Practices: Tradition, Tacit Knowledge, and Presuppositions
The concept of "practices"—whether of representation, of political or scientific traditions, or of organizational culture—is central to social theory. In this book, Stephen Turner presents the first analysis and critique of the idea of practice as it has developed in the various theoretical traditions of the social sciences and the humanities. Understood broadly as a tacit understanding "shared" by a group, the concept of a practice has a fatal difficulty, Turner argues: there is no plausible mechanism by which a "practice" is transmitted or reproduced. The historical uses of the concept, from Durkheim to Kripke's version of Wittgenstein, provide examples of the contortions that thinkers have been forced into by this problem, and show the ultimate implausibility of the idea. Turner's conclusion sketches a picture of what happens when we do without the notion of a shared practice, and how this bears on social theory and philosophy. It explains why social theory cannot get beyond the stage of constructing fuzzy analogies, and why the standard constructions of the contemporary philosophical problem of relativism depend upon this defective notion. This first book-length critique of practice theory is sure to stir discussion and controversy in a wide range of fields, from philosophy and science studies to sociology, anthropology, literary studies, and political and legal theory. .

A New Critique of Theoretical Thought: The Necessary Presuppositions of Philosophy (Dooyeweerd, H. Works. Ser. A, V. 1)
This is the first in a series of four volumes It offers a fundamental critique of the long-lasting, rationalistic belief that theoretical thought is autonomous, supplemented by an extensive analysis of the development of modern humanistic philosophy, showing that it is in the grip of the supra-theoretical basic ground-motive of "nature and freedom" (science ideal versus nature ideal). In addition it investigates the relationship between philosophy and world- and life-view as well as assessing the foundational influence of philosophical conceptions on the various academic disciplines ("special sciences")..

No Unexamined Presuppositions, Please
The authors love affair with books began at age five with PADDY-PAWS: Four Adventures of the Prairie Dog with the Red Coat, which is still in his possession Although, influenced by a few good teachers, the early years were wasted, except when Bill Barlows pathway to books opened up with the discovery of the library at the age of 12. Never shy about confrontation, Bill went to war with the world: still, books filled the hours of R and R (rest and relaxation). After 50 years of battle, Bill returned to the world of books, again finding a friend and ally in combating a ghost. The words of Lloyd C. Douglas, If a man harbors any sort of fear, it percolates through all his thinking, damages his personality, makes him landlord to a ghost, had become all too real over the years. Bill Barlow has learned that the search for truth requires honesty when examining the facts. Great explorers like Lewis and Clark, and adventurers such as Charles Lindberg had to deal honestly with the environments, which confronted them. Society has never put such demands upon the individual, but rather condones dishonesty, because it is dishonest. Bill challenges the reader in a fact-filled journey to examine his foundations in a wide range of subjects, to ultimately examining his very soul. I was wrong and I am sorry are the most difficult three word sentences in the English language. Are you prepared to say one or both of them?.

Collective Absolute Presuppositions: Tectonic Plates for the Churches (American University Studies Series VII, Theology and Religion)
Like tectonic plates, collective absolute presuppositions are obscured by linguistic conventions, cognitive patterns, and current social and cultural precedents. Yet, because they are a part of the way human beings structure reality, they determine how the principles of religious faith are received. Professors, pastors, preachers, teachers, religious educators, and others who have accepted the challenge to seek greater understanding of the religious traditions to which they are devoted, regularly deal with them. This book presents them as integral to practical theology, describes how to identify and describe them, and details their theological significance and history..

Dynamics of Meaning: Anaphora, Presupposition, and the Theory of Grammar
In The Dynamics of Meaning, Gennaro Chierchia tackles central issues in dynamic semantics and extends the general framework.
Chapter 1 introduces the notion of dynamic semantics and discusses in detail the phenomena that have been used to motivate it, such as "donkey" sentences and adverbs of quantification. The second chapter explores in greater depth the interpretation of indefinites and issues related to presuppositions of uniqueness and the "E-type strategy." In Chapter 3, Chierchia extends the dynamic approach to the domain of syntactic theory, considering a range of empirical problems that includes backwards anaphora, reconstruction effects, and weak crossover. The final chapter develops the formal system of dynamic semantics to deal with central issues of definites and presupposition. Chierchia shows that an approach based on a principled enrichment of the mechanisms dealing with meaning is to be preferred on empirical grounds over approaches that depend on an enrichment of the syntactic apparatus.
Dynamics of Meaning illustrates how seemingly abstract stances on the nature of meaning can have significant and far-reaching linguistic consequences, leading to the detection of new facts and influencing our understanding of the syntax/semantics/pragmatics interface. .
