The Reconfigured Eye: Visual Truth in the Post-Photographic Era
"An intelligent and readable approach to the digitization of images. . . . A useful overview of a critical subject." -- New York Times Book Review Enhanced? Or faked? Today the very idea of photographic veracity is being radically challenged by the emerging technology of digital image manipulation and synthesis: photographs can now be altered at will in ways that are virtually undetectable, and photorealistic synthesized images are becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish from actual photographs. Continuing William Mitchell's investigations of how we understand, reason about, and use images, The Reconfigured Eye provides the first systematic, critical analysis of the digital imaging revolution. It describes the technology of the digital image in detail and looks closely at how it is changing the way we explore ideas, at its aesthetic potential, and at the ethical questions it raises..

Dewey Reconfigured: Essays on Deweyan Pragmatism (Suny Series in the Philosophy of the Social Sciences)
Eleven essays, all but one appearing here for the first time, offer a spectrum of recent critical perspectives on issues central to the philosophy of John Dewey and to what is now known as Deweyan pragmatism. The contributors focus on classically Deweyan concerns such as the nature of experience, selfhood, ethics, education, aesthetics, and democracy, as well as on the relation of those concerns to recent debates concerning feminism, epistemological foundationalism, and the nature of the pragmatist legacy..

Isolationism Reconfigured
This iconoclastic and fundamental work, Eric Nordlinger's last, advocates a new variant of isolationism, a "national strategy" confining U.S. military actions largely to North America and to neighboring sea-and air- lanes but encouraging international activism and engagement in nonsecurity realms. In Nordlinger's view, disengaging from security commitments on distant shores would liberate the United States to use its resources and decision-making powers to act more effectively abroad in matters of economic policy and human rights. A national strategy would then become a powerful new method of encouraging international ideals of democracy, and isolationism would be freed of its previous associations with appeasement, weakness, economic protectionism, and self-serving nationalism.

Nordlinger draws on the recent historical record to show that a national strategy would have lessened the perils of earlier decades, including those of the Cold War. While real dangers did exist during this period, engaged strategies, such as containment, too often exacerbated them. The United States could have effectively and far less expensively helped to deter Communist aggression in Europe and Asia by encouraging other nations to make larger investments in their own protection. Marshaling impressive empirical evidence in defense of a controversial position, this final work by a leading scholar of international affairs is essential reading for scholars, practitioners, and lay readers alike..

Reconfigured Sovereignty: Multi-Layered Governance in the Global Age (The International Political Economy of New Regionalisms Series)
Much of the literature on globalization argues that state sovereignty is eroded from above and outside, that is, sovereignty is wrested from the state by institutions, organizations and forces larger than and external to the state (for example, international and regional organizations and multinational firms). This volume breaks new ground by suggesting that globalization actually empowers jurisdictions and institutions smaller than and internal to the nation-state such as cities and towns, regions and provinces. Should the processes and mechanisms of economic market integration continue over time, the book predicts that the empowerment and autonomy of cities and regions would, while not leading to the disappearance of the nation-state, give rise to reconfigured and more complex notions of sovereignty and multi-layered governance. This multidisciplinary volume should be of interest to libraries and scholars of comparative politics/political economy, international relations, international political economy, urban and regional planning..

Women's Movements Facing the Reconfigured State
How have women's movements responded as state governments delegated power to transnational organizations like the European Union? Have they facilitated the shifts in state policy responsibilities to subnational governments, independent agencies, and the private sector? This study examines how women's movements have contributed and responded to changes in state powers and policy responsibility in North America and Western Europe. The international scholars contributing to this volume identify movement changes that include greater engagement with the state, specific policy-making ventures and challenges to national governments..

Anamorphosic Texts and Reconfigured Visions: Improvised Traditions in Contemporary Ukrainian and Irish Literature (Soviet and Post-Soviet Politics and Society 62)
In Anamorphosic Texts, Maryna Romanets turns a discriminating lens on a still "liminal" Ukrainian cultural space and, through its relation to the experiences of one of the earliest decolonized nations, Ireland, puts it on the discursive postcolonial map, thereby destabilizing the paradigm of homogeneous Eurocentricity adop-ted by much postcolonial critique. Bringing together two peripheral European literatures, Romanets uses Irish and Ukrainian histories as a shared point of reference, charting an essentially untouched area of comparative typology in postcolonial cultural politics. Returning to the chiaroscuro terrain of respective nineteenth-century Revivalist movements, she projects their volatile energies onto contemporary struggles of the two cultures to represent their occluded, traumatic pasts and ever-evasive presents. In five linked essays, Romanets explores, in their sociocultural contexts, the works of Kostenko, NĂ Dhomhnaill, Zabuzhko, Pokalchuk, Vynnychuk, Poderviansky, Longley, Heaney, Murphy, Carson, Montague, Banville, and Izdryk. She examines the ways these authors evoke the significatory powers of their traditions to forge imaginary ones; interrogate the boundaries and slippages among personal, national, social, gendered, and historical disjunctions; and make every history open to revision and contestation. Drawing on postcolonial, intertextual, representation, and gender theories, Anamorphosic Texts reveals the mechanisms of conversion whereby Ukrainian and Irish writers, by engaging in epistemic dialogues with their own traditions, colonial discourses, and multicultural influxes, devise political strategies of empowerment and enunciation..
