Cuba Represent!: Cuban Arts, State Power, and the Making of New Revolutionary Cultures
In Cuba something curious has happened over the past fifteen years. The government has allowed vocal criticism of its policies to be expressed within the arts. Filmmakers, rappers, and visual and performance artists have addressed sensitive issues including bureaucracy, racial and gender discrimination, emigration, and alienation. How can this vibrant body of work be reconciled with the standard representations of a repressive, authoritarian cultural apparatus? In Cuba Represent! Sujatha Fernandes—a scholar and musician who has performed in Cuba—answers that question.

Combining textual analyses of films, rap songs, and visual artworks; ethnographic material collected in Cuba; and insights into the nation’s history and political economy, Fernandes details the new forms of engagement with official institutions that have opened up as a result of changing relationships between state and society in the post-Soviet period. She demonstrates that in a moment of extreme hardship and uncertainty, the Cuban state has moved to a more permeable model of power. Artists and other members of the public are collaborating with government actors to partially incorporate critical cultural expressions into official discourse. The Cuban leadership has come to recognize the benefits of supporting artists: rappers offer a link to increasingly frustrated black youth in Cuba; visual artists are an important source of international prestige and hard currency; and films help unify Cubans through community discourse about the nation. Cuba Represent! reveals that part of the socialist government’s resilience stems from its ability to absorb oppositional ideas and values..

    Working Class Represent
WORKING CLASS REPRESENT - Poetry by Cristin O'Keefe Aptowicz"Aptowicz is the real deal, the genuine article, and her work is like the household product you never knew you needed, but that you cannot live without "John S. Hall, author Jesus was Way Cool"In her third collection of poetry, Cristin O'Keefe Aptowicz celebrates all the ups and downs of being performance poet with a day job. Whether exulting the mundanity of office life ("Rules of Slack"), musing about hidden perks of college poetry gigs ("Ode to College Cafeterias") or hilariously defending the use of humor in poetry ("To the Guy Who Said that Funny Poetry Ain't Poetry"), this book continues her tradition of witty, honest and idiosyncratic work. This expanded version includes dozens previously unpublished poems as well as well-worn favorites, such as "QaParHa," her pop-culture-saturated love poem which is (partially) delivered in Klingon..

Public Defenders: Pragmatic and Political Motivations to Represent the Indigent (Criminal Justice (Lfb Scholarly Publishing Llc).)
Weiss finds that public defenders' motivations may be "pragmatic" and include the opportunity for trials or the lifestyle advantages that come with government legal work. Others may be "political" -- the desire to give meaning to constitutional protections, the altruistic urge to help others, or the chance to confront police, prosecutors and judges who many public defenders believe treat their clients unfairly. These sentiments arise frequently and their expression suggests that they comprise a mindset unique to public defenders. While critics claim that public defenders lack the dedication to represent poor clients effectively, Weiss concludes that many are passionate about their work, seeing it as a way to challenge the mistreatment they believe their clients suffer..

Imagining the Arab Other: How Arabs and Non-Arabs Represent Each Other (Library of Modern Middle East Studies)
In this innovative study, Professor Tahar Labib seeks to understand how the 'Other' is viewed in Arab culture, and vice versa. Imagining The Arab Other examines how Turks, Europeans, Christians and Iranians have been represented in the arts, opinions and cultures of the Arab world. Conversely, it also explores the intellectual representation of 'The Arab' in other cultures. It demonstrates the central role of the Catholic Church in ascribing to the Arab peoples a set of characteristics associated with the 'Other'. Labib places this survey in the context of theoretical debates, started by Edward Said's 'Orientalism', on the construction of 'Other'. With its diversity of perspectives, Imagining The Arab Other offers a new way of understanding of identity and cultural difference in the Middle East, one which goes beyond the Orientalist / Occidentalist paradigm.

The Space between Our Ears: How the Brain Represents Visual Space
In The Space Between our Ears Michael Morgan explains how our brain interprets what we see. Using a wealth of sources from over the centuries including philosophical writings, scientific thinking, experiments, passages from poems and novels, and scenes from films, Morgan reveals the difficulty in working out exactly how we make and receive our visual perceptions. To illustrate various points the book includes optical drawings as well as simple experiments that the reader can perform to test the different components of sight and our reactions to it. The book describes and criticises recent attempts to locate the 'neural correlates of consciousness' in specific parts of the brain. Against what he calls the 'secretion theory of consciousness' Morgan controversially argues that visual perception is most likely to be a function of the whole visual pathway, not just a small part of it. This intelligent, engaging book provides a revelatory overview of what we know about how the brain works regarding visual space, giving a unique insight into one of our most vital yet least understood senses..
