Michael Earl Ballenger, a.k.a. Coach “B”, was born in 1952 and started coaching when he wasn’t much older than the kids that he coached He has now been in coaching for over thirty years. Mike coaches at Pella High School (Iowa) for the program where he was once a three-sport athlete. During his coaching career with the program, the Pella basketball teams won back-to-back state championships in 2002 and 2003. Mike has coached his own sons, division-1 athletes, and even a pro. He has been a head high-school coach, a graduate assistant at the college level, and now serves as an assistant coach at PHS. Many high-school coaches attempt to coach by emulating their favorite college coaches, overlooking the inherent constraints at the high-school level.
