The painting Qingming Shang He Tu (Scenes along the River during the Qingming Festival ), painted on light-colored silk measuring 24.8cmX 528.7cm and bearing Emperor Huizong s signature, is presently preserved in the Palace Museum in Beijing. It is considered to be one of the most brilliant works in Chinese art history. As a genre painting, it focuses on themes related to daily life, depicting the hustle and bustle in the early twelfth-century city of Bianjing (modern-day Kaifeng), then the capital of Northern Song Dynasty, as its citizens celebrate the Qingming Festival. Attached to the back of the scroll are annotations which were written over the course of several dynasties..
