Squarely Pegged: Flomot and Beyond
Is there a Flomot? Peggy Gunn McCracken has heard that question many times as readers of her SQUARELY PEGGED column in the Pecos (Texas) Enterprise relate to stories of her childhood there. Yes, there really is a Flomot, McCracken says. Her grandfather, Licurgas Aurelious Gunn, homesteaded in 1901 on the Motley County side of the Floyd-Motley County line. When a Post Office was established on a nearby ranch, it was named for the two counties. Flomot alumni return every three years for a homecoming celebration in the tiny burg where farmers still bring their cotton to be ginned in the Fall, women gather in the remains of the schoolhouse cafeteria and gymnasium for a monthly club meeting, and everyone turns out for funerals. McCracken gives some insight into her reporting days for the Pecos (Texas) Enterprise and delights in family in this 100-page book of memories..
