The Semantics-Pragmatics of Route Directions: Unveiling the complexity inherent to a subfield of German language-and-thought backstage spatial cognition
Have you ever asked for directions to reach an unknown destination? Or instead, have you ever given path descriptions to orient people in an unfamiliar environment? This is one of the most basic overlap areas between spatial reasoning and language use. How in the world do people conceive of such a text genre, and what are all the conceptual and verbal processes involved in understanding/producing, in a word construeing this very specific subdomain of communicative competence? The present doctoral dissertation advocates that the complex dynamics at stake when Germans have to meet this challenge encompasses mental-linguistic activities that can be traced back to a three-faceted model: a knowledge dimension is responsible for creating a cognitive map to picture the scenery along and the line linking source and goal. A discourse facet deals with a string of speech bubbles to organize in language the mental landscape highlighted by the cognitive map at hand. And a virtual dialog model is in charge of establishing a partnership uniting the writer of the wayfinding instructions and her reader to agree on a perspective taking to handle their cooperation in absentia fruitfully enough..

Twin voltage-ramp reset for high speed addressing of three-electrode AC plasma display panel [An article from: Displays]
This digital document is a journal article from Displays, published by Elsevier in 2004. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
This paper presents a waveform for driving an AC plasma display panel (PDP). The proposed twin reset (TR) waveform can drive AC PDP at a significantly reduced scan time, while keeping a good contrast ratio. It uses two similar reset waveforms for the scan and common electrodes to form the desired charge states: two identical set-up ramps to form the desired charge states and two different set-down ramps to speed up the address and sustain discharges. The measured dark luminance with the twelve-reset selective-write method is 0.23cd/m^2 for the TR waveform, while it is 0.67cd/m^2 for a typical drive waveform. The achieved contrast ratio is ~2470:1. The jitters on the address discharge are ~1.0 @ms under reasonable operation conditions. The measured margins on the sustain voltage with a 1.2 @ms scan pulse show that the TR waveform is suitable for displaying high quality pictures. .
