Necessary But Not Sufficient
After reading the newspapers and following the sharp oscillations of the stock market, it becomes apparent that hi-tech companies are of a different breed. Never before have the chances of making a fortune been so realistic and never before have large companies been so fragile. What is really going on inside these hi-tech companies? What types of pressures and challenges are they facing? And how do they cope? Computer software providers, especially the ones that specialize in handling the data needs of organizations, are prime examples of these volatile companies. In the nineties we witnessed their growth from small businesses into multi-billion dollar giants. No wonder investors were attracted. In 1998 it was easy for such companies to raise as much money as they wanted. But now, investment funds have dried up. Why? And more importantly, is there a way to reverse the trend? This book gives the answers..

Self-Sufficient Sailor
This book is what the title says. It is the distillation of what the Pardeys have learned in 150,000 miles of sailing on board their two cutters, Seraffyn and Taleisin and on scores of other boats they have delivered or raced. Lin and Larry tell how they have sailed in comfort and safety without large cash outlays on a pay-as-you-earn-as-you-go plan and by simplifying. A sailor who relies on expensive equipment - radios, radar, safety harnesses, emergency flares, or liferaft - is risking disaster. A sailors reliance must be on self first and on electronics and mechanics last. For example, do not count on your safety harness to keep you attached to the boat. Do, however, learn the how, why, and what of not falling overboard in the first place. Know the proper layout and gear that will eliminate the need to take risks in any weather. How to learn basic sailing and seamanship, to choose a boat and equipment designed for safe, comfortable voyaging: how to learn m! aintenance and repair, inspection of rigging and equipment, sailing without an engine - these are what the Pardeys teach. This is an essential book for coastal and offshore sailors alike. In its first edition, this invaluable text has seen nine reprints. Now Lin and Larry have updated and revised the information to make it current and a valuable addition to any sailors library right up to the millennium..

This Is Not Sufficient: An Essay on Animality and Human Nature in Derrida
Derrida wrote extensively on "the question of the animal." In particular, he challenged Heidegger's, Husserl's, and other philosophers' work on the subject, questioning their phenomenological criteria for distinguishing humans from animals. Examining a range of Derrida's writings, including his most recent L'animal que donc je suis, as well as Aporias, Of Spirit, Rams, and Rogues, Leonard Lawlor reconstructs a portrait of Derrida's views on animality and their intimate connection to his thinking on ethics, names and singularity, sovereignty, and the notion of a common world. Derrida believed that humans and animals cannot be substantially separated, yet neither do they form a continuous species. Instead, in his "staggered analogy," Derrida asserts that all living beings are weak and therefore capable of suffering. This controversial claim both refuted the notion that humans and animals possess autonomy and contradicted the assumption that they possess the trait of machinery. However, it does offer the foundation for an argument-which Lawlor brilliantly and passionately defines in his book-in which humans are able to will this weakness into a kind of u nconditional hospitality. Humans are not strong enough to keep themselves separate from animals. In other words, we are too weak to keep animals from entering into our sphere. Lawlor's argument is a bold approach to remedying "the problem of the worst," or the complete extermination of life, which is fast becoming a reality. .

Self-Sufficient Housing: 1st Advanced Architecture Contest
The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) presents a detailed selection of entries presented during its 1st Advanced Architecture Contest: Self-Sufficient Housing. Created for students and professionals to inspire changes in how new buildings are designed and constructed, the Self-Sufficient competition challenged participants to design a self-sufficient and ecologically oriented dwelling. In the early 20th century, the concept of dwelling was defined as a machine for living," a reference to a new way of understanding the construction of inhabitable spaces that characterized the Machine Age. Today, a century later, we face the challenge of constructing a sustainable or self-sufficient dwelling, a living organism that interacts with its environment, exchanging resources, and which functions as an entirely independent entity. The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) has collected a selection of entries presented during its 1st Advanced Architecture Contest: Self-Sufficient Housing..
