Wisdom, Intelligence, and Creativity Synthesized
For thirty years, Robert J. Sternberg has been among the most vocal critics of narrow conceptions of intelligence In Wisdom, Intelligence, and Creativity Synthesized Sternberg critically reviews and summarizes the best research available on human intelligence. He argues that any serious understanding of intelligence must go beyond the standard paper and pencil tests currently in use. In addition to analytical and quantitative abilities, a theory of intelligence must take account of peoples' creative abilities - their ability to go beyond given information and imagine new and exciting ways of reformulating old problems. It must also take into account peoples' ability to weigh options carefully and act prudently. Understanding one's own intellectual shortcomings and learning how to overcome, Sternberg argues, is just as important as developing one's strengths. As he weaves his way through decades of important research on these questions, Sternberg develops a vision of human intelligence that is far more nuanced and accurate than anything previously offered. Wisdom, Intelligence, and Creativity Synthesized is essential reading for psychologists, cognitive scientists, educators, and organizational researchers.

Robert J. Sternberg is Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences and Professor of Psychology at Tufts University. Prior to being at Tufts, he was IBM Professor of Psychology and Education, Professor of Management in the School of Management, and Director of the Center for the Psychology of Abilities, Competencies, and Expertise at Yale University. This center, now relocated to Tufts, is dedicated to the advancement of theory, research, practice, and policy advancing the notion of intelligence as developing expertise, as a construct that is modifiable and capable, to some extent, of development throughout the lifespan. Author of over 1,100 articles, chapters, and books, Sternberg's research focuses on intelligence, creativity, and wisdom, and he has studied love and close relationships as well as hate..

The Pill, Pygmy Chimps, and Degas' Horse/the Remarkable Autobiography of the Award-Winning Scientist Who Synthesized the Birth Control Pill
Carl Djerassi is the father of the birth control pill, developer of antihistamines, founder of chemical companies and teacher of world-class chemists. Blending descriptions of the lucrative world of drug development with controversial chapters on the politics of contraception and chapters about his personal and professional aspirations, this book tells the story of a productive and socially-conscious chemist. The book tells how Djerassi, at the age of 28, within a 12-month period, working in an obscure laboratory in Mexico City, first synthesized cortisone and then the pill. The book describes his reaction to criticism from feminists that the pill was unsafe and reflected the scientific community's sexism. Finally, the book chronicles Djerassi's career at the pinnacle of success in business and academia and his metamorphosis into a socially-conscious scientist, culminating in his founding of one of the first environmentally-aware pesticide companies. Carl Djerassi is the author of "Cantor's Dilemma" and "The Politics of Contraception"..

Powerful People Have Powerful CHEE: Your Daily Guide to Synthesized Fitness of the Mind, Body, and Spirit
Powerful People Have Powerful Chee is composed of daily assignments regarding the soundness of mind, wellness of the body, and the human excellence of the spirit to enable you to discover the untapped wealth of inner strength available to you. These lessons are laid-out in four sections. The first part of the daily drill is an inspiring quotation from a powerful person. The idea is to thoughtfully reflect upon the passage as it relates to the subject matter. Knowledge of attaining Chee is gained through a daily assignment via a straightforward yet simple set of exercises and drills. Each one is a small building block of knowledge. Next the work guide asks you, the powerful person in training, to do research on the quotation. This task can easily take you back in time and into the circumstances involving the words spoken by the author of the quote. Finally, the last part of the work is a six months review. This practice reinforces your book of knowledge on the balance of mind, body and spirit. When you properly apply this learning in your daily life, as well as in situations with your family, friends, and fellow workers, you will become more powerful, one day at a time..

Photocatalytic degradation of 4-chlorophenol with combustion synthesized TiO"2 under visible light irradiation [An article from: Chemical Engineering Journal]
This digital document is a journal article from Chemical Engineering Journal, published by Elsevier in 2007. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
Carbon-modified TiO"2 catalysts were synthesized from tetrabutyl titanate and glycine by a solution combustion method. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), XPS, UV-vis absorption and photocatalytic degradation of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP). The obtained catalysts show much high activities for degradation of 4-CP than that of Degussa P25 under irradiation at wavelengths longer than 400nm. Hydroquinone (HQ), benzoquinone (BQ) and hydroxyhydroquinone (HHQ) were found to be the main intermediates of the photocatalytic 4-CP degradation with carbon-modified TiO"2 by HPLC measurement. Moreover, the calcination time of synthesized TiO"2 catalysts played a significant role in the photocatalytic activity. .
