A Leader Becomes a Leader: Inspirational Stories of Leadership for a New Generation
A Leader Becomes a Leader opens with a window on history: Henry David Thoreau riding a borrowed horse and wagon into the woods around Concord, Massachusetts to Walden Pond in 1845. There, he writes a classic work that has a powerful effect on the lives and philosophies of seminal leaders in the next century as diverse as Mohandas Gandhi, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Nelson Mandela. Thoreau believed that a spirit exists in work of a high order that works outside time to touch readers whenever he or she proves ready. This book in a vivid presentation of images and essays asks an important question: is there a spirit to leadership? Does it exist, and if it does, can it work outside the normal, linear confines of history to mark the progress of civilization in important and consequential ways? A Leader Becomes a Leader: Inspirational Stories of Leadership for a New Generation is a thought-provoking and much-heralded first work from nationally recognized entreprenuer and author J. Kevin Sheehan. With 207 gorgeous photographs and a splendid design from award-winning graphic artist Jan Lindy Boyce, the book lays out cinematically, with sprawling visuals that present critical themes of leadership that get little coverage in current media: Seeking Justice, Sowing Peace, Manifesting Beauty, and With Vision are some of the important realms that make up the books architecture. The book asserts that the spirit of leadership and the core human values that underline it are universal, inherent human capacities that ''often go underestimated or unrecognized when people settle for less.'' The Determination of Nelson Mandela, The Presence of Eleanor Roosevelt, The Experiments of Mohatma Gandhi, The Decency of Cesar Chavez are some of the compelling section titles. Take a journey, and discover how some of the most consequential leaders of the last century developed into the people that we remember, and find inside this book the metaphoric struggles that make or break us on our own paths to leadership. The book is distinguished in the variety of leadership segments and iconic figures it represents. They include Abraham Lincoln, Nelson Mandela, Franklin Roosevelt, Albert Schweitzer, Katherine Graham, Neil Armstrong, Aung San Suu Kyii, Pele, and 57 others!.

Tough Cookies: Tales of Obsession, Toil and Tenacity from Britain's Kitchen Heavyweights
British food was never renowned for its flair and inventiveness, until the 1980s when Marco Pierre White led an extraordinary revolution in British cuisine. Passionate and unpredictable, he inspired many of the top chefs in Britain today. In this insightful book, Simon Wright exposes the revolution for what it was and shows how the passionate idealism of the early years has been compromised. He takes us inside the kitchen to the brotherhood of chefs and tells the very distinct tales of Gordon Ramsay, Heston Blumenthal, Shaun Hill, and Marcus Wareing—four men who have risen through the vicious climate of the kitchen to make a special mark. Theirs is an elite band, tough to join, and these are the stories of how they qualified for membership. From Michelin stars and the AA Restaurant Guide to haute cuisine and bacon and egg ice cream, nothing will ever be quite the same again on the British restaurant scene. .

The Tenacity of Unreasonable Beliefs: Fundamentalism and the Fear of Truth
The Tenacity of Unreasonable Beliefs is a passionate yet analytical critique of Jewish, Christian, and Muslim scriptural fundamentalists. Schimmel examines the ways in which otherwise intelligent and bright Jews, Christians, and Muslims defend their belief in the divine authorship of the Bible or of the Koran, and other religious beliefs derived from those claims, against overwhelming evidence and argument to the contrary from science, scholarship, common sense, and rational analysis. He also examines the motives, fears, and anxieties of scriptural fundamentalists that induce them to cling so tenaciously to their unreasonable beliefs. Schimmel begins with reflections on his own journey from commitment to Orthodox Judaism, through doubts about its theological dogmas and doctrines, to eventual denial of their truth. He follows this with an examination of theological and philosophical debates about the proper relationships between faith, reason, and revelation. Schimmel then devotes separate chapters to Jewish, Christian, and Muslim scriptural fundamentalism, noting their similarities and differences. He analyzes in depth the psychological and social reasons why people acquire, maintain, and protect unreasonable religious beliefs, and how they do so. Schimmel also discusses unethical and immoral consequences of scriptural fundamentalism, such as gender inequality, homophobia, lack of intellectual honesty, self-righteousness, intolerance, propagation of falsehood, and in some instances, the advocacy of violence and terrorism. He concludes with a discussion of why, when, and where it is appropriate to critique, challenge, and combat scriptural fundamentalists. The Tenacity of Unreasonable Beliefs is thoughtful and provocative, written to encourage self-reflection and self-criticism, and to stimulate and to enlighten all who are interested in the psychology of religion and in religious fundamentalism..
