Pacific Electric Red Cars (CA) (Images of Rail)
Of the rail lines created at the turn of the 20th century, in order to build interurban links through Southern California communities around metropolitan Los Angeles, the Pacific Electric grew to be the most prominent of all. The Pacific Electric Railway is synonymous with Henry Edwards Huntington, the capitalist with many decades of railroad experience, who formed the “P. E.” and expanded it as principal owner for nearly its first decade. Huntington sold his PE holdings to the giant Southern Pacific Railroad in 1910, and the following year the SP absorbed nearly every electric line in the fourcounty area around Los Angeles in the “Great Merger” into a “new” Pacific Electric. Founded in 1901 and terminated in 1965, Pacific Electric was known as the “World’s Great Interurban.”.

Twin Cities by Trolley: The Streetcar Era in Minneapolis and St. Paul
The recent development of light rail transit in the Twin Cities has been an undeniable success. Plans for additional lines progress, and our ways of shopping, dining, and commuting are changing dramatically. As we embrace riding the new Hiawatha light rail line, an older era comes to mind—the age when everyone rode the more than 500 miles of track that crisscrossed the Twin Cities.

In Twin Cities by Trolley, John Diers and Aaron Isaacs offer a rolling snapshot of Minneapolis and St. Paul from the 1880s to the 1950s, when the streetcar system shaped the growth and character of the entire metropolitan area. More than 400 photographs and 70 maps let the reader follow the tracks from Stillwater to University Avenue to Lake Minnetonka, through Uptown to downtown Minneapolis. The illustrations show nearly every neighborhood in Minneapolis and St. Paul as it was during the streetcar era.

At its peak in the 1920s and early 1930s, the Twin City Rapid Transit Company (TCRT) operated over 900 streetcars, owned 523 miles of track, and carried more than 200 million passengers annually. Recounting the rise and fall of the TCRT, Twin Cities by Trolley explores the history, organization, and operations of the streetcar system, including life as a streetcar operator and the technology, design, and construction of the cars.

Inspiring fond memories for anyone who grew up in the Twin Cities, Twin Cities by Trolley leads readers on a fascinating and enlightening tour of this bygone era in the neighborhood and the city they call home.

John W. Diers has worked in the transit industry for thirty-five years, including twenty-five years at the Twin Cities Metropolitan Transit Commission. He has written for Trains, and has served on the board of the Minnesota Transportation Museum.

Aaron Isaacs worked with Metro Transit for thirty-three years. He is the author of Twin City Lines—The 1940s and The Como-Harriet Streetcar Line. He is also the editor of Railway Museum Quarterly.

Pittsburgh Streamlined Trolleys (PA) (Images of Rail)
Pittsburgh Streamlined Trolleys covers the history of the trolley car system that once had the third largest fleet of Presidents' Conference Committee trolley cars in North America. Pittsburgh Railways Company was very innovative and constantly made design improvements in its trolley cars. This led to increased ridership, as these streamlined trolleys were quiet, fast, and had comfortable seating. With the increased use of automobiles, ridership declined. After the Port Authority of Allegheny County took over Pittsburgh Railways, most of the trolley routes were abandoned. However, a number of trolleys were refurbished with paint schemes that included psychedelic commercial advertising and community messages. The last runs of these trolleys occurred in 1999, and new light rail vehicles are now in service..

Love Me Turkmenistan
Saparmurat Niyazov, President of the Turkmen Soviet Socialist
Republic of Turkmenistan, died early on 21st December 2006 in a
strange new world of his own creation.
His official title, bestowed on himself, was Turkmenbashi , or
leader of Turkmen .
Coming from a humble orphaned background, he soon worked
his way up through the Communist party, and was eventually
made President of a newly independent Turkmenistan from the
collapsing Soviet Union.
The surreal reality that followed was a twenty-year long
dictatorship, considered one of the hardest in the world, where he
gave his people free salt, electricity and gas - but also the lowest
minimum wage possible.
Even the months of the year were renamed to pay homage to
Niyazov and his family.
By 2001 all internet cafes were closed and ballet and opera
were banned, and in 2004, the state even forbade young men
from growing long hair or beards and it was prohibited for news
readers to wear make-up
LOVE ME Turkmenistan is a vivid, colourful and often very
humorous depiction of a country dominated by the dark shadow
of its ex-leader, with full-technicolour depictions of its capital, its
monuments, and its people, now released from a surreal chapter
in their country s history.
Each vivid image is accompanied by an actual quote from
Niyazov, forming a strong and often outrageous commentary..
