Rogue Nation: American Unilateralism And The Failure Of Good Intentions
America's democratic ideals have long been the hope of the world, but our allies increasingly see us as abandoning those ideals. It's not hard to understand why. In the months before 9/11, the United States walked away from a number of international treaties including the Kyoto Accord. After the attack, the United States turned a cold shoulder to NATO's offers to assist with the invasion of Afghanistan, unilaterally terminated the ABM treaty, and actively opposed the creation of an International Criminal Court. Then came the war on Iraq, begun despite the clear refusal of the United Nations Security Council to authorize an invasion.Obsessed with our own immediate military and economic security, we now deem institutions like NATO and the UN irrelevant. We have abandoned containment for a policy of preventive attacks on potential threats. More and more, we act alone, with little regard for the needs and goals of other nations.Rogue Nation is not an argument against American dominance or the exercise of American power. It's an argument against stupidity, arrogance, and ignorance in the exercise of power. Prestowitz explores the historical roots of the unilateral impulse and shows how it now influences every important area of American foreign policy. Even now, when the need for multilateral action has never been greater, we continue to act contrary to international law, custom, and our own best interests.

The United States Contested: American Unilateralism and European Discontent
Why is America contested by Europeans? The book seeks to answer this question and contribute to a better understanding of contemporary transatlantic tensions

Adopting different theoretical perspectives, the contributors to this volume assess the European discontent with America and relate this to the unilateral turn of US foreign policy in the 2000s. American unilateralism is interpreted by all the authors as the expression of a new conservative nationalism which has been growing in the country since the 1970s and became culturally hegemonic after 9/11. This cultural hegemony found an institutional predominance with the elections of 2002 and 2004. The current conservative nationalism, with its unilateral foreign policy, has presented itself as a radical alternative to American liberal nationalism of the post-world war II era and its multilateral vision of the international system. Moreover, American conservative nationalism appears to be at logger-heads with the post-national evolution of the European states. The latter was largely supported by liberal America in the past and is in the final steps to provide a supra-national constitution for the future. Thus, while conservative nationalism is re-affirming the identity of America as a Westphalian state, Europe, through the European Union, is striving for a post-Westphalian global order. Bringing together leading American and European experts, with a preface by Robert A. Dahl this book explores:

DT The rise of American conservative nationalism

DT US Foreign policy

DT Transatlantic relations

DT Anti-Americanism

DT The Iraq War

DT The future of American political and cultural hegemony

This book will be vital reading for students of international relations, foreign policy analysis, American and European politics..
