Who was Garet Garrett? Garet
Garrett (1878-1954) is a case study in a
forgotten genius, about whom Ludwig von Mises said: "His keen
penetration and his forceful, direct
language are...unsurpassed by any author." For half of a
century Garrett was
regarded as one of the keenest observers of the American experiment. He detailed its successes and failures with equal fervor. As editor of the Saturday Evening Post, Garrett became one of the country's foremost opponents of Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal policies and later one of the most vocal opponents of FDR's rush to involvement in WWII. History has largely forgotten this journalist of the Old Right but Seattle Post-Intelligencer editorialist Bruce Ramsey has tried to correct that oversight. This engrossing biography describes Garrett the man and delves deeply into the life of Garrett the journalist. With excerpts from Garrett's reporting, novels and columns, as well as Garrett's personal papers, Ramsey illuminates the life of a man that is justly viewed as one of the most eloquent defenders of freedom in America and one of the earliest authors to develop what is now viewed as the Libertarian perspective on government..
