Australian Cellular 2004-2008 Forecast and Analysis: Upwardly Mobile

This study updates IDC's five-year forecast of the Australian cellular market in terms of user numbers and revenue "Cellular penetration in Australia is poised to reach natural saturation next year, with device proliferation, multiple-SIM card use and fixed-to-mobile substitution driving subscriptions beyond that point," says Warren Chaisatien, IDC Australia's Senior Analyst for Mobile and Wireless Solutions. He adds that although voice will remain the "killer app," making up the bulk of carrier revenue, non-voice services will be the major revenue and profitability growth driver and the primary battleground for the next five years.

IDC believes carriers should consider the following as they tap into that market growth potential: encourage use of non-voice services by leveraging third-party content; target "low-hanging fruits" in business wireless deployment; focus on sustained marketing efforts in the consumer market; and recognise and respond to differences in various sub-segments.
